Why am I Anywhere

10 - 11 January 2018

Flat38 is excited to present our first show of 2018. Bringing together the work of local, national and international artists, Why Am I Anywhere juxtaposes psychedelic painting with luxuriantly grotesque video, frontierless sonics and immersive installation art - all in a domestic setting.

Athelstan Sound
Athelstan Sound is a Margate-based experimental sound and listening group, facilitated by Dan Scott. They meet monthly at Resort Studios, and it is free and open to all. Athelstan Sound will be performing a group piece based around Satie's concept of Furniture Music for Why am I Anywhere.

Charlie Schaffer
Charlie Schaffer is a painter who lives in Margate. Working primarily with oil, he forms durational relationships with his sitters, producing dialogic, sometimes impressionistic portraits. Charlie will be showing a selection of figurative works of Margate residents for this exhibition.

Greta Alfaro
Born in Spain, Greta Alfaro is a multimedia visual artist, whose work has been shown at Whitechapel Gallery and The Saatchi Gallery among others. Alfaro’s work encompasses photography, video, sculpture and performance art - exploring themes of mortality, nature and decadence, often by contrasting the lavish and the revolting.

Hedley Roberts

Hedley Roberts makes ‘non-portraits’ of lovers, friends, family, acquaintances and strangers. He begins by working from photographic collages using source material from social media sites or images sent to him by friends. Why am I Anywhere will see Hedley's work shown in Margate for the first time.

Teresa Winter
Bouncing forever down a hall of mirrors, Teresa's zero-gravity music lands hooks where no hook should stay – hanging like glow-worms amidst a multiverse of voices. Teresa will offer a rare live performance for Why am I Anywhere.

Viennetta is Flat38 founders and residents Claire Orme and Richard Greenan. As Viennetta, they construct all-enveloping installation art using prosaic materials. Claire and Richard will be creating a new work for this exhibition.

Why Am I Anywhere is kindly supported by Kit Records and Kent Arts Investment Fund.
